Review: Cuter Cuticles Mani Bombs and Cuticle Oil

Tonight’s Indie Appreciation Week post takes us back to when I made my first indie purchase. It was a time when my weekly manicures were increasing in frequency, and I found myself changing polish every 2-3 days. All that acetone took a toll on my nails and cuticles, and I was desperate for a fix. That’s when I discovered Cuter Cuticles and placed my very first order. Now, almost a year later, Sammy’s handmade cuticle oils and mani bombs have become a necessary part of my nail care routine.

As you can see, my nails and cuticles get pretty dry after a round of swatching and mending a cracked nail. But don’t worry, Cuter Cuticles can save them!

This Sweet Tarts Treasure Bomb is ready to drop into a bowl of warm water. Treasure bombs are a bit more special than regular mani bombs because they have a surprise hidden inside. Who doesn’t love surprises?

The bombs fizz up and release an intoxicating scent. I honestly can’t say which scent is my favourite because there are just so many to choose from and they all smell divine.

Now just soak your fingers and relax. Be sure to wear at least a clear coat of polish if you plan to soak for more than a few minutes – too much water can be damaging to your nails. This is also a good time to search for the treasure if you used a treasure bomb.

After soaking for a few minutes, slather on some cuticle oil and enjoy your treasure. This smiley face ring was the perfect treasure, as it complements my happy, healthy cuticles.

May 2015 Ipsy Glam Bag

There are so many subscription boxes available these days, it’s difficult to choose just one. I’ve been an Ipsy subscriber for about a year and a half now, and the bags have been hit and miss. Sometimes I absolutely adore my glam bag, and other times I just don’t have an interest in any of the products. More often than not, I enjoy 2-3 products and pass the rest onto my mom to try. Though I have to admit, Ipsy is a great deal for the price. Even if I only enjoy one product from the glam bag, that one product is generally worth at least the $15ish ($10USD + shipping) that I paid for the bag.

May’s glam bag arrived this week and it’s one of the best selections of products I’ve seen in awhile. Now that I’m building up my kit for freelance work, I’m finding uses for products that I may not have used before. Also, how cute is that bag?!

One product in particular that will be making its way into my makeup kit is the Bellapierre Cosmetics Gel Eyeliner Pencil in Ebony. This waterproof pencil glides on effortlessly and provides intense pigment, while staying on all day without smudging. The creamy gel formula in pencil form allows for a quick and easy application, which will save a lot of time when working on clients.

For those of us with oily skin, finding a moisturizer that hydrates while mattifying skin can be quite difficult. This Morning Dew Matte-Finish Moisturiser from Amie provides a smooth base for my makeup without adding excess oil.

Urban Decay is my go-to brand for eyeshadow and liner, but I’ve never used any of their lip products. I am so excited to try the new Revolution High-Color Lipgloss in Failbait and Bittersweet. These colours are so vibrant and fun, and I’m a sucker for purple lips. These samples also came with the Ozone 24/7 Glide-On Lip Pencil, a clear liner that works under any lipstick or gloss to prevent bleeding and fill fine lines.

Blending brushes have been extremely valuable in my first few makeup classes, so I was thrilled to find one in my glam bag this month. I’ve received Luxie brushes from Ipsy before and I love them. The bristles are unbelievably soft and there hasn’t been any fallout at all. This tapered blending brush is the perfect addition to my brush kit.

Many years of colouring my hair has left it a little dry, especially at the ends. I can hear my locks calling for this leave-in conditioning spray from Briogeo. I’ve seen this brand at Sephora, but haven’t tried it yet, so I’m looking forward to testing Rosarco Milk on these desperate strands. I will definitely be doing a full review of this conditioner in a later post, so keep an eye out for it.

Overall, I’d say this month’s Ipsy glam bag was a huge success. Sorry, Mom, I won’t be sharing any products this time around.

Review: GLAMGLOW SUPERMUD Clearing Treatment

glamglow product

I’ve struggled with acne for most of my life, so I’m always looking for products to help clear my skin. GLAMGLOW is a brand often praised in the skincare world, but the price has made me hesitant in the past. At $76 CAD, those tiny little containers just didn’t seem worth it. I finally took the plunge and purchased the GLAMGLOW SUPERMUD Clearing Treatment earlier this month when Sephora had a 15% off deal. I just had to see what all the fuss was about.

The SUPERMUD formula is designed to heal problem skin and prevent future breakouts by drawing dirt and oils out of your pores. It sounds similar to those blackhead-clearing strips, but unlike the drying and sometimes irritating blackhead strips, SUPERMUD claims to also brighten and soften skin. I’ve been putting those claims to the test this past week and I’m quite pleased with the results.

The packaging says the mud can be used as a full face mask (17 uses) or a spot treatment (1000 uses). I want the product to last as long as possible, so I chose to use it as a spot treatment on my chin — my most troublesome area.

I applied the mud to my chin and found that a little goes a long way, and it’s best to spread it on as thin as possible so that it fully dries. You can see in the above picture that certain areas didn’t dry completely because of the product being too thick. I learned from that mistake the second time around.

The first time I used SUPERMUD, I left it on for a full 20 minutes. The mask doesn’t smell great, but it’s definitely bearable, and the smell goes away as the mud dries. After only a minute or two, I could feel my skin tightening and there was a nice cooling sensation.  As I washed my face with warm water, the tight feeling disappeared and I was left with soft and smooth skin. I’ll be honest, I couldn’t see much of a difference immediately after the first use. My face definitely felt cleaner, and some of the redness had subsided, but I was looking for more visible changes.

Over the course of the next seven days, my skin had significantly fewer breakouts than usual, and it looked a lot brighter as well. So while there weren’t many instant changes, I was certainly seeing changes as the days went on. I decided to try it again on the seventh day, and only left the mask on for 10 minutes the second time. Again, my skin felt super smooth and clean, even though I had the mask on for less time (the package says to leave it for 5-20 minutes). A lot of face masks require 20-30 minutes, which is a bit of a pain, so I was happy to see results in a shorter period of time. I imagine my skin will keep improving if I continue using the mask 1-2 times per week, as it has made quite a difference in the first week alone. The pictures below are from day one: prior to the first treatment, and day seven: after the second treatment.

Overall, I’m pretty impressed by GLAMGLOW SUPERMUD Clearing Treatment. I was expecting amazing results based on all the hype, and while I wasn’t disappointed, I still don’t know if it’s worth the price. The mask made my skin feel fresh and clean, and reduced breakouts and irritation, but I won’t be buying it at full price any time soon.

Final score: 8.5/10

Welcome to Midnight Hour Beauty!

My name is Sarah and I’m a beauty-holic. I paint my nails at least twice a week and spend far too much money at Sephora. I’m currently building my freelance business as a makeup artist and nail technician, and am taking a makeup course to help me along that path.

I’m also a bit of an insomniac. It’s about 1am right now and, as usual, I’m sitting here working away on my computer. Most of my posts will probably go up late at night, as that is when my brain truly comes alive. But don’t worry if you’re not a night owl, you crazy morning people can just see the posts when you wake up.

The Midnight Hour Beauty blog is about pretty much anything related to cosmetics and beauty. Expect to see posts ranging from product reviews and tutorials, to daily looks and must-have favourites. I’ll even have a diary series to chronicle my days at beauty school.

Come back Tuesday to see my review of GLAMGLOW® SUPERMUD™ Clearing Treatment!
